Prunus ‘Accolade’. Broadleaf deciduous tree, to about 25 ft (7.6 m) tall and wide, open and airy crown, spreading, twiggy, long slender branches which tend to droop. Bark is attractive, smooth, reddish-brown, marked with horizontal lenticels.


Flowering Cherry ‘Accolade’, Cherry ‘Accolade’ Regarded as one of the most attractive of the early-flowering ornamental cherries, award-winning Prunus ‘Accolade’ is a small deciduous tree of spreading habit. Opening from dark pink buds, profuse semi-double, shell pink flowers held in drooping clusters appear in early to mid spring.


Prunus Accolade is a hybrid cross between Prunus sargentii and Prunus x subhirtella. This clone is a well known and proven variety that won the First Class Certificate in 1954, the RHS Award of Garden Merit in 1952 and the updated version in 2002. Owing to its parentage, this tree is one of the first Ornamental Cherry trees to come into flower in the spring time, producing its prolific semi-double pink.

Prunus ‘Accolade’ is a gracefully spreading cherry tree and will reach an estimated height and spread of 6 x 4 metres in 20 years. In April-May a cloud of rose-pink, semi-double flowers emerge from deep pink buds in pendulous clusters. These blousy blooms are quite large, measuring up to 4cm in diameter.


A hybrid of two Prunus discovered in the 1950s by Waterers Nursery of Surrey. It is a cross between Prunus subhirtella, which brings magnificent pink blossom that flowers early, and Prunus sargentii with its renowed vibrant autumn leaf colour. This graceful tree spreads out from the stem with arching branches which droop elegantly.

Prunus ‘Accolade’ has a vase-shaped crown with horizontal, parallel branches and therefore grows to be reasonably wide. The tree grows up to 6 to 8 metres tall and 4 to 6 metres wide. The ornamental cherry ‘A ccolade’ blossoms early, from as soon as the beginning of April, with pink, half-filled flowers.
